New Design Intern Joins Fig Industries

by Anthony Gorick

Alexandria “Alex” Shope is our Fig Industries Design Intern for early 2019. She will be helping the design team create branding and marketing for clients at Fig Industries, working on some signature projects, and assisting in the production and layout of the Spring Fig Magazines. We asked Alex some questions to help the team get to know her better!

What do you love about design?

For me what I love most about design is communication. A design can communicate so much just by the colors used, fonts, hierarchy, shapes, illustrations, even the placement of a photo on a page. 95% of the communication in design is done visually, which is most intriguing to me. That means that no matter what language, gender, age, or even culture a person is they can somehow pull information from a piece of design.

What do you enjoy about working in Lancaster?

What I love most about working in Lancaster is the experience. This city has so much to offer from diversity in food to the variety of places to do and see. I hope by working in Lancaster I will be able to experience more of what this city has to offer.

What has been your favorite project Fig Industries has recently worked on?

The project I enjoy most that Fig has done in the past would have to be the branding of Per Diem. I think the brand identity just captures the elegance and simplicity of the restaurant. The rich neutral colors with a pop of burnt orange aids in the elegance of the design. The typefaces selected gives the menu a sophistication. Overall this project is beautiful and unique.

Who would play you in the movie version of your life?

I would have to say, Sandra Bullock. I am a huge fan of her as an actress and I think she always plays her part in a movie perfectly.

What inspires you?

I am inspired by culture. The intricacy in every culture is so beautiful in its own unique way. There is always something to learn when it comes to culture and no culture is exactly the same.

Fill in the blank: My happy place is…

Currently, I have two drastically different happy places. My happy place is either on a boat anchored along a little island along the coast with the salt in my hair and the sunshine kissing my skin. Or in New York City tasting my different kinds of food and spontaneously exploring the streets of the city.

What’s your favorite candy?

Chocolate has always been a weakness of mine, but when Peanut Butter M&M’s are in front of me I cannot stay out of the bag.

Anything else you’d want us to know?

Ice cream is definitely the key to my heart. I love to travel. Although I have not gone many places I hope to see the world beyond an electronic screen one day. I love street art and am inspired by Eduardo Kobra. From when I was little art has always been a passion. Instead of playing with dolls I was somehow drawing or doing a little craft.
