Meet Our Fig Industries Design Intern

by Anthony Gorick

Sierra Fry is our Fig Industries Design Intern for Summer 2017. She has been helping the design team create branding and marketing for clients at Fig Industries as well as assisting in the production and layout of the Fall Fig magazines. We asked Sierra some questions to help the team get to know her better.

What is your favorite part of being an Intern at Fig Industries?

My favorite part of being an intern here at Fig has been getting to know everyone. Each person has different strengths that play off each other and come together to make a truly great team. I also love art directing on photoshoots because it provides a chance to interact directly with the clients and really see how Fig supports them.

What do you love about design?

More than aesthetics, I love how design is really all about solving problems. There is such a rich history to pull from in order to form the most meaningful relationship between communicator and viewer. I also value any design opportunities I have to work with my hands and make something beyond the computer.

What do you enjoy about working in Lancaster?

I love walking down the streets and finding all the hidden gems of architecture and typography throughout the city. Also, there are infinite possibilities when it comes to good food! And every market day feels like a celebration of what makes Lancaster great.

What has been your favorite project so far at Fig Industries?

I think my favorite project has been designing the graphics for the School District of Lancaster’s Back to School Block Party. Old circus posters hold a special place in my heart, so drawing from that inspiration for the carnival theme was so fun. I also truly feel like this project really demonstrates how design can lend a hand in helping the local community.

Who would play you in the movie version of your life?

Kiera Knightley! Like when she has the big curly hair and all those beautiful historical costumes in “The Duchess.” I am a hopeless romantic and a history nerd, so I feel like she’s the perfect fit.

What inspires you?

One of my biggest passions is design history! I am always looking back in time for inspiration. Along those lines, I’ve been collecting antiques alongside my dad since I was little, and I have a pretty extensive collection of ephemera from all eras and styles. I love letterpress and printmaking, and I’m also inspired by nature and the details of the world around me.

Fill in the blank: My happy place is…

My happy place is the forest. Pennsylvania is so beautiful and I feel most at home when I’m wandering around in the woods, usually with my camera, picking up leaves, feathers, bones, or anything else that catches my eye.

What’s your favorite candy?

My favorite candy is a tie between gummy bears and raspberry jellies!

Anything else you’d want us to know?

If I could listen to one album for the rest of my life, it would definitely be Simon and Garfunkel’s Bridge Over Troubled Water. I would never get tired of singing along!
